Open Farm Sunday is almost here
Looking forward to this years SMALL gathering of invited people to have a farm walk and afternoon tea afterwards.
Aftter two years plus of being illl and 12 months of building, I now ahve more energy and will power again and feel like being active and contributing to everything again.
Subsequently Philp and I have dug a huge allotment next to the house, and planted everything form potatoes to Butternut squash. We ahve had lots of fun doing it and luckily the weather has been nice enought to get on this year. I avhe also ahd a green house isntalled and that is full of tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, chillies and some autumn plants.
My three geese whihc I ahve ahd for 5 weeks , fattening for Christmas have done very well, although one is ill today. My Hens are laying well after the introduction of 6 new point of lays which are in fact all now laying.
minton my tiddling lamb had his last feed of bottled milk yesterday and is now on his own, although he still tries it on a the fence for just one more bottle!
Hopefully we are going to pick up two horses on friday to trail for my daughter Hannah the week is full and life is wonderful....

March31st - Snow On The Hills
A windy cold morning with snow on the hills overlooking us. One lamb died in the shed in the night, his belly was full but he had started to scour so don't really know what happened there.
Picked a big dead single lamb off the filed below, something had had his stomach out, and the crows had pecked out his eyes other than that he looked healthy. Philip picked up a small twin lamb off the field behind from the small stream, looked as if he had drowned - poor thing, well that's all the dead ones over here.
Kate accompanied Philip during the night and they had a calf and had to pull a couple of lambs, a big single and a pair of twins. feeding lots of lambs a supplement as a lot of our yearling ewes just haven't performed this year, they have little or no milk so the extra two pairs of hands is coming in handy.
Looking forward to WI this evening, I am taking a community dance session with them - just hope they enjoy it.
And my big son Tom comes home for the weekend on Friday so I am really looking forward to that, thinking of doing a big curry night on Saturday...... get cooking then Rachael

Lambing has Started
Two students from Nottingham Vetinary University arrived on Sunday signalling the start of the main lambing. Kate and Poppy have settled in well and are very keen, both getting up at 3am the fist night to check the lambing sheds, and Poppy taking the shift last night. Both have had the experience of pulling lambs at the main lambing sheds and are keen to muck in - and out!"
Yesterday morning saw me eating my porridge as I was handed a lamb bought from of the fields who was 'sick'. Buster, our 6 month old jack Russel licked him to warm him up and stimulate him - I think! and Jess blow dried him with a hair dryer, whilst I spent nearly and hour getting 100ml of lamb milk down him. Hannah named him Bertie and off he went back to the lambing sheds where he continued to improve throughout the day and then died last night! that's lambing for you.....
I of course am stuck with feeding all of the people involved in lambing and the children who are off school for the Easter holidays I have just put 20 lamb chops in the slow cooker ready for lunch time and am about to make a batch of welsh cakes.
Ever imminent is the financial year end on the 31st of March. i wander how that will go down with the men when i ask them for a stock take this week!

A Proper Winter
Whilst out in the garden on Sunday Philip Pleaching our hedge and me digging an old border over, Philip commented that we are having a 'proper' winter, with which I had to agree. Cold snaps, frost and snow. Not too much rain, and now warmer spring days to look forward to.
We already have about 200 lambs on the farm from our 2 early lambing bouts, and several calves.
Out Latest Tb test last week revealed we have 2 inconclusive so we are still under TB restrictions, and are to test again in 60 days.
Our Bull and 2 of the cattle slaughtered after the last TB test showed visible lesions on their lungs at the post mortem. we suspect that as we have complied with all the movement legislation, and our herd was TB clear at the beginning of the summer, that the summer out with the Badgers has reinfected the herd - what else can it be?

I'm Back!

After a year or more of illness I'm now feeling good and back to work with avengence!
Lambing started this weekend, and calving got off to a good start with a little Bull calf, a bit before time being born, and looking good.
The weather which left us snowed in for three weeks has cleared leaving a milder climate in which we can work well for the time of year.
The men have been busy preparing pens in the sheds, and putting gates to right, as well as installing a new gated system at Nantleach, so the pesky ewes who get turned out with their lambs can't keep coming back down to the sheds to steal more sheep cake!
For those who don't know we are not butchering much meat now as Waitrose are buying all of our Welsh Black Cattle, and we will be doing only the third market every month at Aberystwyth.
Out Last TB test before Christmas gave us four inconclusive results, and when the four were tested again last week, it appears sadly that they are reading as having Tb although this test is only 70% accurate they will have to go to be killed. One of them is our prize bull which we paid £3000 for
